DID YOU KNOW?

Geldard & Geldard (2001:37) explains that in order for therapeutic work to be maximally useful and effective, the counselor needs to have as much information as possible about the child including the child’s behaviour, emotional state, personality, the child’s history, cultural background, and the environment within which the child lives. Initial information comes at the time of referral, from the referral source. According to Geldard & Geldard (2001:37) it must be remembered that the information given by a referral source may be inaccurate and distorted because of the referrer’s own agenda. However, such information is still useful because it is someone else’s perception of what is happening. It is helpful to collect several different opinions with regard to the child, but to remember that these are opinions which may not be factually correct.
